My Plan for Spring Sports Photography

As winter sports have begun to wind down, I have had a number of folks ask me whether I plan to shoot games in the spring. Many of you know that I have been a baseball umpire for many years, so usually I don’t have much time to take photos.

In fact, looking in my archive, it appears that the last time I shot a baseball game was way back in 2013!

This year will be different. I recently let my assignors for basketball and baseball know that I will be giving up officiating to focus on photography.

Since I’m not traveling extensively for work as I did for 20+ years, I have had a chance to spend a lot more time capturing game action in the fall and winter. I want to continue to do that, so I made the difficult choice to step away from refereeing and umpiring.

On one hand, it wasn’t an easy decision because I have enjoyed being a sports official for more than a decade, and I know just how much of a shortage all sports face in finding people to officiate.

On the other hand, it was an easy decision because I have had so much fun taking pictures and the more I do of it, the more my quality improves.

So this spring you will see me out on the fields, photographing baseball, softball, lacrosse, tennis, and pretty much anything else I can find in the Bow, NH area. As we move into the summer, I will shift from school games to the many local rec leagues.

I look forward to being on the other side of the fence this season and seeing many of you out there!
